How Often Should You Service Your Boiler?

Why annual servicing matters

A boiler service isn't just a box-ticking exercise. It catches small faults before they turn into breakdowns, keeps the boiler running efficiently, and confirms it's operating safely. A poorly maintained boiler can be a genuine safety risk, carbon monoxide included.

It protects your warranty

Most manufacturers require proof of annual servicing to keep a boiler's warranty valid. Skip a year and an expensive repair that should have been covered might not be.

What happens during a service

A thorough service includes a visual inspection, checking the flue and ventilation, testing safety devices, and checking gas pressure and burner performance to confirm the boiler is running safely and efficiently. For a straightforward system it usually takes 30–45 minutes.

Signs your boiler needs attention now, not later

A yellow or flickering flame instead of a crisp blue one, a boiler that keeps losing pressure, unusual banging or gurgling noises, or a sudden jump in your gas bill are all worth getting checked rather than waiting for your next scheduled service.

When to book

The best time to service a boiler is before the heating season starts, so any issues are sorted before you're relying on it every day. If it's been over a year since your last one, or you can't actually remember when it was, it's worth getting one booked in.
